Engineering change number for material.

Dear all,

I want to configure ECN for material at characteristic level. The requirement is whenever characteristic value is changed in material master it should be saved under change number and person should be able to usethe material with reference to change number in future.

i can create change documents and change number for material but when i try to change characteristic value (for CLASS 300).I get a warning message that change number will be ignored for class type 300.I tried to maintain the class type in customization for classification but was not successful.

Can anybody tell me where to maintain settings for the same and how as i am bit confused about this?

Has anybody worked on this scenario before?

Help on this topic will be appreciated as i need to deliver solution to the client urgently.
