What is the "Hit List" function for?

It will tell how many entries are there , as per your query
eg: in a query you are searching for employess related datas for all employees in a particular payroll area , the hit list wil give the number of emoployees

You r saying about HIT List, which u get, when u clik on free search. rt
what ever above person right. instead of that go for search term and structural search.
but adhoc query is different.
