JRE checkbox in Internet Explorer have to be selected?

Hi,

We are going live with one company and we have the doubt if is necesary to have selected the checkbox JRE in the Internet Explorer (Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced tab -> Java options -> Use JRE 1.6....) do I have to select that checkbox or is not necesary for the functionality in the portal? What is the function about this checkbox? for what is needed??
