restart numbering series

When I restart numbering for the new year, this is combined with existing (previous year's) series, and once I add new document for the new year, I see two same numbers one last year's and one new year's number. This is very annoying specially when I want to search. I want to be able to continue from previous year's data but want only the new year data shown on screens. Is this possible???
