Reporting solved questions

Former Member

Hi

Since underleying motivation tool in forums is the "points", I think this suggestion will at least be acceptable.

Since some contributors forget to reward points, there may be a new utility providing posters other than who opened the thread, to report it is solved and a content manager marks the question as solved after inspection. The inspection may be just to look for a post saying "Thanks. Question is solved" or something like that.

Is that possible?

I completely agree with Serdar's view point. I have been visiting the ABAP and BSP forum regularly. BSP Forum, the points part and answers to questions are more/less taken care of. However in the ABAP forum, that doesn't seem to be the case.

Almost all the questions that have been asked are answered diligently and of course, it should be the duty of the person to assign points and close the answer. Somehow for them it seems irrelevant. People like Serdar, Nablan and Thomas take time to answer questions and even post snippets of code so that solution can be easily understood. I would request the concerned moderator to kindly look into the matter and propose a solution.

Hi Serdar and Subramanian,

We actually do have that functionality in place. In addition to the original author, any forum moderator or global moderator has the ability to reward points, or even edit those that have been rewarded. What's really missing is a mechanism to "prod" a moderator to check on the status of all the posts in their area. They can use the star symbols to check what is marked as questions, and what is been marked as partially or fully answered. What would make it more complete would be an aging mechanism that would send a notice after a certain number of days that a post was marked as a question and still "open". They could then look at the post and see if it is still open because it really hasn't been answered well, or whether the original poster has never bothered to look back.

David

Hi David,

Thanks for replying. First of all, let me comment about the new SDN look. It looks fantastic and very neat. Good job.

Regarding the functionality where the moderator can award points, yes I am aware of that and the moderator (Mary Joan Hebert , is it? ) has been very proactive in doing that.

Aging is one method, which sounds good. One more suggestion would be, most of the newbies to SDN site ask repeated questions. Can we have some kind of process, wherein, people who have posted less than 10 questions, be first shown similar query in that particular forum and then allow to post. In fact, it would be great, if this process is for the entiry SDN fraternity.

For eg. lets say A writes his first question on 'How to put ALV header ?' and clicks on Post. Initially he is shown, already posted queries on ALV Header and below there is a small button, 'No , this doesn't answer my question. I shall continue posting'.

Suggestion No. 2 is, probably put a signature for every reply to the question. Signature stating that "Does this reply , answer your question or has it been helpful." And state what points could be awarded.

Point is to appreciate the use of the forum and people who respond to the questions. SDN has done very well by bringing in the points system.

Craig Cmheil has written a wonderful weblog on that.

Regards,

Subramanian V.

Hi David

There may be another button which is visible to contributors other than the one who opened the issue which, when pressed, will prod a moderator to check the thread. Aging will also bring more exactness. As I've mentioned earlier, some are so obvious that initiators write "Thanks" but forget or do not know rewarding. Mary Joan is checking for these but normally she still overlook some.

e.g.

1.

2.

3.

In fact, if I were an expert, the points would be non of the business. However, for the moment I want to see how much I can answer ABAP questions. Whenever I make them solved, it motivates me and I am happy that I share my knowledge.

Anyhow, mine was a proposition to make the pointing system better on the way. Sorry since AI is not that capable for the moment.

Another example:

I couldn't achieve to make Puppala to give right points. One of my post would get a 6 point and Nablan's would 10. But you see, I got 16 and Nablan 6.

By the way, I am also impressed with the new frame layout. It seems more professional. Thank you the developers...

Regards...

Hi Guys,

Thanks for noticing that we do spot check the forums, but we just don't have the time to check all the deserving threads! I try to post replies where it's appropriate to remind the posters to reward answers, but it is difficult for the newbies. Hope it improves over time.

Cheers,

Joan

(of course I gave you guys points!)

Concerning the reward points:

I think the text next to the yellow star is very misleading - it says sth. like: "has your question been answered - then please give reward points".

But if your question was NOT completely answered and the answer has been helpful, then I found myself hesitation, because I feared that the question would be closed by clicking the yellow star.

But when not clicking on the star, how should people find out that they can reward helpful hints without switching the post to "answered".

So I think the text should read "Has this answer been helpful for you..." etc.

Greetings

Christian

Hi SDN Forum posters,

We know about the problems with rewarding points and are working on a solution that should be coming out within the next weeks.

It will be a lot more obvious that points should be given and a lot easier to give points too.

All the best, Mark.
