Genereic Data Extraction vs. Business Content Activation

Hey guys

Please help me understand, through scenrios, the difference between generic data extraction and data upload through business content activation. Closely related to that, how is generic data extraction different other methods of extraction such as: BW content extractors (FI,CO,HR,Lo Cockpit) and Custom Generated extractors (LIS, FI-SL, and CO-PA)? I hope someone can answer this! Thanks!
