Why is that we are running out of memory even though we have enough RAM to accomodate oracle and SAP and linux OS requirements?

I wanted to know as what exactly the sappfpar reports? and PGA will be allocated on demand right?

What kind of "issues"? Linux always uses all available memory.

what is you /etc/sysconfig/sapconf?

Is VMC activated? (vmcj/activate =1)

Hi mark,

There is no file /etc/sysconfig/sapconf.

I pasted the output of /sbin/sysctl -a | more

Please let me know in case i am looking into the wrong file.

HI markus,

Whats the significance of /dev/shm?Linux does require lot of memory but do you think there is a need for tuning the system.Thanks.

Hi markus,

Regarding vmc

DEFAULT.PFL:vmcj/option/ps = 768M

DEFAULT.PFL:vmcj/option/maxJavaHeap = 200M

DEFAULT.PFL:vmcj/enable = on

These are the parameters available.Thanks.

The frequent issues are like hanging of the system we cannot stop the system whenever there is full utlisation of the memory.

First a few other questions:

What Linux distribution do you use? Is this Redhat?

Are you using Veritas filesystem and/or VxVM?

Hi Markus,

This is Red hat

Regarding veritas file system i presume you are referring to VCS cluster. We dont have a cluster.Pasted below the file system layout.Markus by the looks does this look like VxVM .

Yes, it seems you're using veritas filesystem (check by issuing 'mount').

> none 7.9G 1019M 6.9G 13% /dev/shm

So this seems to be the culprit.

Your profile configuration doesn't match the system configuration. The system tries to allocate more memory on start than there is available. Once the physical memory is reached you swap out to the filesystem which almost stalls the system.

I suggest you go through

Note 941735 - SAP memory management for 64-bit Linux systems

and adapt the profile and/or the system parameters.

Hi,

*.shared_pool_size=2272002048

2.2GB is huge unless there is an Oracle requirement on LINUX.

you can scale this right back by at least 1.6GB.

Tho I am running AIX 5.3 so I would check first via SMP notes.
