Oracle 11g - Instant Client upgrade question

Former Member

Hello All,

I recently upgraded Oracle db from 10.2.0.4 to 11.2.0.2 in AIX64bit . Initially we had the client version 10.2.0.4 and as per the upgrade guide Section 3.8- updating the oracle Instant client: I went for 10.2.0.4 Version 5(V5). But after the database upgrade (DBUA) i noticed that the client version is showing 11.2.0.2 (genezi -v). I am not sure if this was upgraded automatically also when database was upgraded. Also, for the client location , it still shows /oracle/client/10x_64/ Dir ...am i supposed to rename this to 11x_64? If anyone could clear my confusion i would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

D

Hi,

Have a read of :

Note 1431794 - Oracle 11.2.0: Instant Client

Basically you are OK with the 10G client you have.

Mark ,

Thanks for your reply and the note. I thought i would have 10G still but it got changed to 11.2.0.2 after the upgrade. I only meant to upgrade the client to Version 5 (10G),, not sure if it upgraded to 11G automatically , any idea?

Hi,

I did do an 11G upgrade last year. Must admit did not notice the client automatically being upgraded..

Can you see the difference? (btw i am sure, genezi -v as sidadm worked with 11.2.0.1)

sidadm > /oracle/client/10x_64/instantclient_10204/genezi -v
Client Shared Library 64-bit - 10.2.0.4.0

System name: HP-UX
Release: B.11.31
Version: U
Machine: ia64

sidadm > genezi -v
Client Shared Library 64-bit - 11.2.0.2.0

System name: HP-UX
Release: B.11.31
Version: U
Machine: ia64

Or

sidadm > strings /oracle/client/10x_64/instantclient_10204/libclntsh.so | grep 'Release'
Oracle Database 10g Release 2 Patch Set 3 10.2.0.4.0

Or check in SAPGui -> Menu -> Status

Cheers Michael

PS: the cause for the behavior is, that there is always a client library in the $ORACLE_HOME directory too. And you have to be careful which one you (genezi) picks...

Michael,

Thanks for your time. Yes, you are right:

When I do :

sidadm > /oracle/client/10x_64/instantclient_10204/genezi -v

it shows:

Client Shared Library 64-bit - 10.2.0.4.0

System name: AIX

Release: 3

Version: 5

Machine: 00C69D744C00

But when i just use : genezi -v as ora<SID>

it shows Client Shared Library 64-bit - 11.2.0.2.0.

In GUI > menu> status shows 11.2.0.2 as well.

So which one is the correct instant client in this case , the first one ? 10.2.0.4 ? since genezi is pulling from /oracle/client/10x_64/instantclient_102_04/.

Thanks again.

The thing is, the SAP kernel is linked with a certain client library version. For 7.0x/7.1x and 7.20 kernels this is the 10g client library. You probably checked the wrong place in the Gui. Have a look at this [screenshot|https://weblogs.sdn.sap.com/weblogs/images/251794761/10g_client.png]. You have to click the small arrow button to see the client version.

Kind regards, Michael
