country field in address service is disabled and has no default value

Hi,

I am using EP 7 & IDES ECC 6.0 with EPH2. I tried login as US employee in ESS portal .When i tried to create a new emergency/mailing address in 'Personal information' service, country field (drop down) is disabled and has no default value USA. If i fill out other mandatory fields and hit review, error message " fill all required entry fields" and country field is highlighted in red.

I then changed LAND1 field to output field in V_T588MFPROPS table. Country field is still disabled but now i get error "enter country" in portal.

Appreciate if you can give inputs on resolving this issue.Thanks
