Standalone usage of the UME api

Everything I've read about the UME 4.0 API talks about running the applications as an iView or within the portal runtime. Is there a way to have a standalone java application using the UME api's to modify user data. What must be present on the client side? Are there certain properties files and/or jar files that need to be accessible to the UME standalone application?

Has this been done before and is there documentation? Thanks!
