I am very new to SAP MDM world and going through the documentation of MDM Publisher and have couple of questions -

1. Do I need to install Client tool only for MDM Publisher or there is a server component too.

2. In our organization we did not define the product based on Family but on taxonomy (category). So family view is disabled in data manager. Can we still use the MDM Publisher to get product catalog?

For print publishing purposes, you also need the Layout server component.

As a prerequisite for print publishing, you must have defined a family table in the MDM Console. This enables the initial partitioning of products for publishing purposes.

Once you have completed the product definition in your repository using the records, hierarchy, and taxonomy mode features, you can go into the publishing-specific data presentation and enlarge the data granularity by using partitioning in the family mode.

As pointed out already, the initial partitioning by category has been defined in the MDM Console, and you can further partition the families by additional attributes (such as odor, or packing type, as seen on the screen).

You need to install both, I mean Client tool that is MDM Publisher as well as server component that is MDM Layout Server.

No, you can not do it until unless you define Family table in the MDM Console. Reason being if you try to open MDM Publisher without defining Family table in Console repository, you will get error . Thus you would not able to open client tool MDM Publisher properly till the time you don't define Family table in MDM Console for this repository.
