Changing Tools Area iView

Hello all,

in the help documentation there is a description on how to customize the Tools Area.

I have two questions concerning the Tools Area:

1. The help documentation does not describe how to change the 2 links that can be shown. Should I change the iView JSP directly or is there another recommended way to do this.

2. I would like to add an iView to the Tools Area iView but I have no idea how to do this in a "neat" way?

Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.

kind regards,

Caspar

I have changed the jsp file and the portal.xml file of the standard portal-par.

This works but I'm not sure if this is the best way to do it.

    the way I did it:

    - make a copy the par-file of the iview (com.sap.portal.navigation.toolarea.par.bak)

    - rename it from .par.bak to .par.bak.bu (a backup in case something goes wrong)

    - make another copy

    - rename it from par.bak to par

    - open the par-file with winzip and change the jsp

    - change the portalapp.xml file if you want to add properties, in the jsp you can retrieve them

in the same way as the standard properties are retrieved (profile.getProperty()..)

    - deploy the new par-file like any other par-file (via Java Development)

    - I had to restart the portal before everything was functioning correctly but Id on't know why

If anyone has better way I'll be glad to hear it.

    kind regards,

    Caspar

Generally it is NOT A GOOD IDEA to simply rename a par file from .bak to .par then modify it and upload it. The file is likely to be replaced with a service pack or patch. A better way is to:

1)Make a copy of the par file with a new name (for instance com.customer.navigation.toolarea.par) and then modify that component.

    2) Extract par file and make modifications

    3) Rezip par file in same directory format

    4) Upload

    5) Create NEW iviews based on the par file components.

    6) Add the NEW iviews to the framework layout or other areas.

If you follow this method you are pretty well insulated from your modifications being overwritten by a patch, hotfix, etc.

<disclaimer>Be warned that you are making a MODIFICATION to the original delivered framework or components and SAP is not liable for any unintended consequence resulting from such a modification. EP6 is much easier to modify and customize, but SAP does not guarantee that your modifications will still work unchanged after an upgrade or hotfix application. This is especially true if you are using unpublished APIs or undocumented features.</disclaimer>
