I've also asked this question and gotten no reply.

Really need to know how much support Eclipse will be getting in the future. It appears that SAP may be heading towards .NET and leaving other tools behind.

A good example of this is the failure to provide the same templates in 6 as was available in 5. jspDynPage, etc.

Would like to know where things are headed so we can put our efforts in the same direction.

Going for .net would be a 180 degrees turn in SAP's strategy. With EP6 they got rid of all .net stuff in the portal framework itself, why should they move from Java to .net now?

Cheers,

don't think so, visual composer and sap netveawer developer studio are based on java and the second one is based on eclipse. since EP5 sap was speaking about .net iview, too early for real application, i guess they want to get compatibility with all web tecnologies.

don't forget actual unifier servers work under IIS.

about eclipse 3.0 i think is not yet supported for technical issue, 3.0 requests JDK 1.4.1 and you couldn't deploy object in portal Ep 60 object with that environment version, or better you could get problematic failure using 1.4.1 instead of 1.3.1

SAP has already announce that .NET will be able to be used to create portal content. This announcement came out in the last couple of months. There is already a download available to build .NET web controls for EP6.

Also SAP and Microsoft have conducted talks about merger and/or acquisition. At this time they say nothing is planned. But the fact that they are talking shows some tendency to go towards Microsoft products.

I don't think they will drop Java any time soon but that doesn't mean they will keep the tools up to par.

Again they have not supplied all of the same functionality in the eclipse addons for 6 as were available for 5. You can still build the apps if you know how or copy an existing project but the wizards are not curently available to build a project from scratch.

The question reamins. When/Will eclipse 3 be supported?

1. SAP now supports also .NET. Simply because we have no interest to develop on a single technology platform.

So we support ABAP, Java and .Net. Now and in the future.

Each of them have their advantages and disadvantages in their respective use case.

ERP will remain on ABAP and the EP platform will remain on Java, having .NET APIs.

2. Eclipse 3.0 will be supported with NW05 in 2005. At last we co-founded the Eclipse organisation. But we cannot switch in the middle of an release.

With Ep5 devlopment was local, with EP6 its serverbased. Thats why it was switched off. but will be solved with NW05 also.

Thanks for the info.

We currently use eclipse on local machine then upload to server for testing. Seems the test system isn't always available. Go figure. Several dozen developers, somebodys gonna screw it up once in a while

Is there any chance of getting eclipse plugins earlier? perhaps even beta test copies?

will also be solved with NW05 with user isolation. Not definitively decided for NW05, but will come.

Difficult. There have been majro incompatible API changes in Eclipse 3.0. So there is no easy migration from 2.1 to 3.0. It will be available for NW05 Ramp-up customers. Maybe I can manage to offer a Sneak Preview version.

No, I don't know but I have an additional related question.

There are plugins for both the EP5 and the EP6 PDK. Will there be plugins for both PDK's? The plugin for EP5 worked for some of the earlier milestone builds.
