Unable to access SLD

I am getting "Attempt to access the System Landscape Directory failed" message when i try importing software components in the Integration Repository.Also when i try accessing Runtime workbench i get "No System Landscape Directory exists. Unable to generate the landscape" eventhough the SLD works fine.What could be the reason behind this.
