MaxDB 7.8 External Backup via Snapshot Clone

We have heard with great pleasure of the new feature of MaxDB version 7.8 supporting external backups via snapshot clones and/or splt mirror techniques (see:

http://maxdb.sap.com/training/expert_sessions/SAP_MaxDB_New_Features_in_Version_78.pdf).

Our DB-Volumes lie in NetApp filers and are mounted per NFS. We already use the benefit of NetApp-Snapshots for the verification of the databases: We mount a (rewritable) snapshot of the volume on an other server, start the database and do the "db_execute check data extended".

With new external backup feature it is possible to register a filesystem backup or a external snapshot in the backup history list. The database than knows about the backup an ca use it as starting point for a new backup history. I didn't try myself, but Automatic Log Backup should be possible.

My question is: Is it possible to go bak to a NetApp-Snaphot (snap restore), bring the database into the ADMIN mode preventing the autorecover process and recover saved transaction logs - until latest or a specific or to a point in time?

Where is this backup/restore porcess documented? Is there a HowTo anywhere?

Sure, why not?

Get back the NetAPP Snapshot, set the database to ADMIN state (db_admin) and initialize the log volume.

That's it.

Even if you leave the log volume in place, you can use 'db_online until ... ' option to move to a specific point in time (although p.i.t. recovery is almost always a mistake to do!).

Check the documentation.

Check the expert sessions on http://maxdb.sap.com.

Check the SDN Wiki.

The information is there!
