R/3 Enterprise on Web AS 6.40

Does anyone know if R/3 Enterprise will run on Web AS 6.40. I just heard a presentation where we informed that only Web AS 6.20 or 6.30 was compatible. However, I thought the Web AS was downward compatible. Also, 6.40 is in ramp-up right now, if it can't be used for Enterprise, what is the ramp-up for? I can't see that SAP would expect customers to run NetWeaver components on 6.40 and then have a separate Web AS for Enterprise. These are very confusing times.

    Hello Jeff,

as always a kernel update (such is 6.40) is not automativcally available for any R/3 version. Just that in former times we did not deliver technology without apps and threrefore there was no reason to give you a new version of the technology before the appropriate R/3 was finished. Though you will first be able to get WebAS 6.40 and then there will an update of R/3.

As this has changed, you now do get WebAS before R/3 runs on it- and, er - the name of the ERP changes to mySAP ERP...

    • Hi Jeff,

the differentiation is that there is a kernel, that is contained in WebAS, but on top of this there is the WebAS ABAP environment, which not necessarily is compatible to your R/3.

So downward compatibility means you could run the 6.40 kernel under R/3, but this means that you won't get the slightest functionality of 6.40 in your ABAP programs.

      Does this make it clear?

      Regards,

      Benny
