Debugging - System.println

I try to get the information in variables using the System.println.out(<variable>). I noticed that it sometimes works and sometimes it doesn't. Is there any setting that I would have to do to make it work? It would be very helpful if I can get it going. I am trying this on the development server as for my application I can't use the pdk.
