how to backup SAP

Dear All,

I am a storage engineer, I would like to develop a strategy to backup SAP with Oracle on HPUX, I would like to know what to backup exactly.

I am using EMC Networker as backup software, they have a module for SAP but it is very expensive.

Is tehre a doc on what to backup for SAP?

Is it enough to backup teh Oracle database and the binaries?

Are there any other things to be backed up.

Sorry I do not have enough ideas about SAP and couldn't find a detailed document about SAP architecture.

thank you very much for the help

Hi,

Is tehre a doc on what to backup for SAP? --> Refer this link [What Needs Backing Up in Oracle with SAP ?|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70ehp1/helpdata/en/b8/ca4ba904e5904e955ff0aa29451ec7/content.htm] and other relative links of help.sap.com.

Also Refer this useful document [BRTools to Back Up the Oracle Database|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/d8fc1f3a-0d01-0010-1c84-ac8bee9f7c9b?quicklink=index&overridelayout=true] and [Backup Strategy for Oracle Database|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/6be4053a-0d01-0010-bfa7-bf9c2979a83c?quicklink=index&overridelayout=true] to get more information.

Welcome to SDN.

>Is tehre a doc on what to backup for SAP?

Yes, if you search on SDN under

>Is it enough to backup teh Oracle database and the binaries?

Whats type of SAP you have mean, Java, ABAP or JAVA+ABAP?

If you have only ABAP then yes, you can copy your database using online_cons backup option and database archive logs and the backup your /usr/sap filesytem. If you follow your instalaltion guide you will know what filessytem SAP use.

/usr/sap

/usr/sap/<SID>

/usr/sap/trans

also backup your oracle directories. If you have a sperate filesystem for ie backup, oraarch etc...

/oracle (exclude your data filesystems)

Make sure you perform a test restore before you configure your backup for production.

why should I use Brtools

isn't it enought to backup the database online using rman and just copying all other filesystems?

BRtools are SAP recommended and supported/verified by SAP. If you search on help.sap.com for RMAN you will get your answer.

Hi,

You can use RMAN with integration of BRBACKUP/BRARCHIVE to perform such backups. You will have to specify tape_copy_cmd with RMAN parameter. BRBACKUP will invoke RMAN for copying data to backup media using SBT Library.

RMAN can perform backups directly to disk, but not directly to tape. RMAN can perform backups directly to tape using SBT Library Interface only.

Refer[ Oracle Recovery Manager |http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/d1/43d7cab9a04a409cc46876e36762c2/content.htm] to get more information about such integration.

Backup taken using RMAN can only be restored using RMAN only.
