In the Microsoft version of BPC, the advice was always to restrict the number of hierarchies in a dimension.
We have several rather large dimensions. (several=greateer than 16, and large is over 10,000 members in each of 3 dimensions).
The question is whether in a NW setup, should we still worry about having 3 hierarchical structures for each of the dimensions, or is the number of hierarchies irrelevant in a NW environment?
Thank you

Hi Tara,
I have not come across this situation earlier. However, I dont think this should be a problem.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
Thank you so much for your response.
The system is working with the multiple hierarchies that we have created.
At this time we are looking for time-efficiencies. Hierarchies was an area to be considered.
I was hoping to get a technical answer....relating to whether the use of multiple hierarchies is or is not a drain on resources in a NW environment (albeit with excel and .net).
Thank you
Tara Sitaram
Hi Tara,
I think that you have that advice in MS version because it's based on the MOLAP model, when all properties and hierarchies are reflected in the cube. Hence when you update data in the Application hierarchies should be updated and properties populated.
NW version is based on ROLAP model, therefore all those activities are not taking affect at the Application update time, but rather at the Query time. You can mitigate that ineffectiveness with Aggregates (for Hierarchies and Properties) or BWA.
You still have to know what is your area of concern: data load, reporting or data transformation. If you have slow running scripts in data transformations you can take a look at my blog [Improve performance of your BPC scripts|http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/weblogs?blog=/pub/wlg/21214] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken];. But I think it could be too early for you to be concerned about script performance.
Please let me now if you need more info.
Cheers,
Gersh
