Crystal Reports print control Active X install

Hi,

Does anyone know if admin rights are needed when installing the ActiveX component of the print control? I have seem workstations that can and cannot install it with and without admin rights. Therefore, I want to know if anyone knows for sure whether admin rights is needed. Also, a lot of times the user opts to install it, but it never did. So if it is not related to rights issue, what could cause ActiveX to not install?

Crystal Reports 2008, BusinessObjects XI 3.1

thanks!

Yes, both the ActiveX controls require Admin rights to be installed.

As Stratos suggested, have your IT guys create a distribution package they can push out using the MS Profile options under the local Administrators account and install for all users.

How do I get a copy of the ActiveX installation package to be distributed to all the users? We do have some Novell software that distributes it out to the users.

Look for a file called PrintControl.cab on your BO server.

And here is some information on how to deploy this for all your users:

Hello,

Typically the WEB server will push the updates out to any user that doesn't have the same version. THe local PC will check the version and if it's not the same then the WEB server should send the CAB files to the work station.

Both the Viewer and Print Control Cab files are located in this folder:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Business Objects\Common\4.0\crystalreportviewers12\ActiveXControls

Once they are received then the INF files are run to update the files.

If you do it manually though I believe you'll have to extract the files and manually copy and then run the inf file.

You are right, it does prompt the user to install the Active X component. When we select install, nothing happens and the print control looks like it hangs. Therefore, i asked if administrator rights is needed on the local PC.

Yes, the user will need admin rights. Typically because the ActiveX controls require Admin permissions to register them.

If you can't then the other suggestion of getting the IT department to push them out under an Admin account is the other option.

Or if there are not to many PC's to do it may be quicker for someone with admin right log in and and them...

One last question. For printing crystal reports, the user has an option to set his/her preferecnes to:

1) print to PDF

2) ActiveX control

Since ActiveX control requires installation with admin rights, I was thinking of telling the users to print to PDF since all user's PCs already has Adobe reader. The question is; is there a global way to set the default to option #1? I think the default for each user is option #2 so if the crystal administrator can update this setting, users won't need to make any changes.

There are some scripts out there (USE THEM AT YOUR ON RISK) that ill enable you to copy the preferences of a specific user to a group of users.

Hi Li,

The link is for WEBI reports, won't work for Crystal report objects.

This post is going off topic. I suggest you post a new question to the businessObjects Enterprise Admin forum and ask them if it's possible. I don't believe so, We don't support modifying anything in out default InfoView. You would have to write your own interface.

Thank you

Don

This depends on the domain/local windows policy. The safest way though is to pre-deploy the ActiveX print client on the workstations of your users using a software distribution mechanism (most organizations have something like this).
