MaxDB Recover Restore error -111 Incompatible Incremental Backup

Former Member

MaxDB 7.5 on Windows 2003 R2 server.

At a DR (Disaster Recovery) test yesterday, using the Recover GUI:

1. Recovery with Initialization

2. "Restore a specified backup from history" starting with the last FULL copy and Incremental Copy

3. The Initialization worked fine.

4. The full copy was restored fine.

5. The Incremental copy failed because of a mis-typed medianame.

6. I started the database, bringing it ONLINE.

7. Fixed the medianame problem.

8. "Restore a Medium" using the Incremental Backup. This was my only choice for "Type of Recovery".

9. Failed with a -111 Incompatible Incremental Backup.

10. Tried restoring until a specified time.

11. Same result: -111

Q1. Was #6 (bringing the system Online) the cause of the -111 error?

Q2. Are there other explanations for a -111?

Q3. At this point (#11) how do I restore to the Incremental Copy?

Thanks

Hello,

Q1. Was #6 (bringing the system Online) the cause of the -111 error?

Yes, you could recover the Inc. databackup after the recover of the databackup,

don't bring the database online if you are planning the recovery of the Inc. databackup/log backups

in sequence.

Q2. Are there other explanations for a -111?

DB error "-111"- Incompatible incremental backup

You could check the database logs and backup history of the source database to get clear on the issue.

Q3. At this point (#11) how do I restore to the Incremental Copy?

Check the backup history of the source database.

Bring the database in admin status.

Run the recovery with initialization.

After the databackup recovery will be finished, don't bring the database on line.

If you are using the Recovery wizard started using DBMGUI, go back &

continue the recovery of the Inc. data backup and log backups ...

Thanks very much Natalia. That was VERY helpful. I expected your response, but I was REALLY hoping for some other way around this. The Initialization and Recover of the Full Backup took 2.5 hours. In order to advance from there using an Incremental backup would have only taken an additional few minutes if I hadn't mistakenly put the database in Online status. Now it will be 2:40 at least. Well, now I know. <sigh>

Two follow-on questions.

Q4. Where is this documented? Either something like "Do not put a database online or you can't recover any further." or perhaps "In order to continue a recovery you must remain in Admin status". I certainly could not find anything written down.

Q5. What is meant by versions? I am guessing that every time the database goes online after a recovery you have another version. The backups taken from that point to the next recover are that latest version. Is that correct? Where is THAT explained and documented?

Thanks very much.......Mark
