CRVS2010 Beta - Database expert crashes Visual Studio

Former Member
0 Kudos

This issue has been previously reported, but never solved.

Every time I try to use the Database Expert, Visual Studio "goes away" ... no delay, no warning. I have tested this with a new project and a new Crystal Report, and I have tried it with a project that was converted from 2005.

I have a clean machine with 32-bit XP Service Pack 3. It has never had another version of Visual Studio. It has never had another version of Crystal Reports.

I reinstalled VS 2010 and it did not solve the problem. I redownloaded reinstalled Crystal Reports and it did not solve the problem.

I uninstalled Crystal Reports and deleted the SAP BusinessObjects directory and uninstalled Visual Studio and deleted its directory. After installing Visual Studio 2010 and Crystal Reports, the results are the same.

This issue was not resolved by the production release.

I uninstalled the Beta and installed the production release.

Still the same problem.

I uninstalled the production release and uninstalled VS2010.

I reinstalled VS2010 and reinstalled the production release.

Still the same problem.

I don't think this issue is solvable over the forums. I suggest creating a phone case [here|http://store.businessobjects.com/store/bobjamer/en_US/pd/productID.98078100?resid=S6I@hgoHAkEAAGsiyVkAAAAR&rests=1282226845369].

If this turns out to be a CR issue, your phone case will be refunded.

I think your suggestion that I pay for help is comical.

My organization has paid me for 40 or 60 or 80 hours while I have wasted time trying to help you find this bug, and now you want me to pay you to continue to help you debug your software.

I don't think so.

It's a beta, upgrade to production release and test again.

Final Production release is now available. See this thread for more info:

I am experiencing the same problem as well with offical release of CR (CRforVS_13_0.exe).

VS either hangs or crashes, but it doesn't do it "gracefully." I have to shutdown VS using the Task Manager because it becomes irresponsive to mouse clicks. It is as if some other invisible process or window has received focus and won't allow any events to be handled by VS.

I am using Windows 7 64-bit, VS 2010 SP1 Rel, and I have been completely unsuccessful at displaying the Database Expert or the Standard Report Creation Wizard from within Visual Studio.

I have two dump files I can upload if you will let me know where I should upload them to.

Thanks!

Nevermind. I saw the solution on another thread. I renamed "c:\temp" to something else and everything started working magically!

Is this a permanent solution or will there be a fix out soon? Will we never be allowed to have a "temp" folder under "C:\"?

I'm pretty sure there will be a fix. It's weird that c:\temp would do this. However, just to setup an expectation. Service Pack 1 will be out end of February and is closed at this time. E.g.; no new issues / fixes will be added. So, this issue should be in SP 2 (targeted for end of May / June-ish).

I see that I accidentally found out that there is a workaround to this problem that I have invested many, many hours to trying to help you solve for the past few months. If csharpsap had not posted his problem and the solution that he found on another thread, I still would not know.

I expected that if a solution was found, I would be notified, either by email, or through this thread. Once I emailed the trace files and install log files I was told that any further interaction would be by email (sounds like shut up and wait).

I did not expect that I needed to still be searching other threads for this workaround. How long has it been known that renaming c:\temp would make the problem go away?

If the option was available, I would have given csharpsap the points for a u201Csolved problemu201D or u201Cvery helpful answeru201D, since he was nice enough to post what he discovered after he reported having the same issue.

It seems like there was another user, I think his ID is thomasswiss, who was having this problem; does he know about this solution?

Remember, this is only a free community forum. Not technical support. If you want fix notifications, etc., etc., you may want to consider obtaining a phone case here;

http://store.businessobjects.com/store/bobjamer/en_US/pd/productID.98078100?resid=S6I@hgoHAkEAAGsiyV...

The issue resolution is documented in several threads on this forum. We did that as soon as we found out what the solution is. We certainly did not go trawling through the forums looking for each individual thread on the issue.

The issue is also now documented in a Kbase (released December 17, 2010) that anyone can search for (search box, top right corner of this web page...);

Hi Chip,

This was my fault.... I worked the issue with Thomas just before I was off for 2 weeks on holidays over Christmas and New Years and completely forgot about updating you and this post.

I owe you one....

Thank you for your patience and sorry again for the delay in letting you know and updating the post.

Hello,

Actually there were a few solutions. One was to disable DEP and then re-install or do a repair install.

Others were to uninstall and empty your temp folders as well as the temp folder it extracts to and then when it prompts specify c:\cr4vs2010.

Are you using Beta 2?

Thank you

Yes I am using Beta 2.

I disabled DEP, rebooted, uninstalled Crystal Reports, and reinstalled Crystal Reports and the result is the same.

Since it didn't work, I know what you are going to say, but ...

Reinstall Crystal Reports, Visual Studio, or both.

Ludek

I have told you in my previous 2 posts that I am using the 32 bit version of Windows XP, Service pack 3, so I must not understand the question. What do you mean by "What OS?"

Yes, I installed Crystal Report Beta 2 after the Visual Studio install.

mmmmmm.....

Have you looked in the logs to see if it catches what is happening?

Is your Project set for 4.0 Framework, not the 4.0 client version?

Run DebugDiag from Microsoft and set it to capture a crash and filter on the devenv.exe. Analyze it and see what it shows.

Have you updated the C++ runtime distribution package from Microsoft? They released a new one which incorporates the new security patches.

Add these to your system Environment Variables:

LOGGING_DIR = c:\logging

LOGGING_ENABLED_ASSERT = 1

LOGGING_ENABLED_RUNTIME = 30

To disable database logging go into the \win32_x86 CR folder and rename crlogger.dll to *.old

Look in the logs to see if it captures anything.

Sorry no one here has seen this problem so we don't know what is causing it.....

Is your OS an OEM version, does the start up splash screen say Dell or some other name brand PC company?

Unfortunately the Beta 2 release install scripts were not complete so it could be anything causing this problem. I've installed the recent one and it is much cleaner.

How about a VM-ware image to install to?

Thank you

The Target Framework is .NET Framework 4

I have not specifically updated the C++ runtime distribution package from Microsoft, but I ensure that I have the latest updates after each time that I install. Is that good enough?

This OS came with the Dell computer.

I tried DebugDiag with all default settings on devenv.exe. It created a file, sized 857326K. I don't understand the Advanced Analysis output, but it looks like the CrashHangAnalysis failed.

I had those environment variables set from a previous excursion into this problem. Here is the logfile:

I created another DebugDiag dump file and had an anaysis complete

Type: Error

Description: In devenv__PID__4248__Date__10_14_2010__Time_11_55_03AM__31__Second_Chance_Exception_C015000F.dmp the assembly instruction at ntdll!RtlDeactivateActivationContext+15f in C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntdll.dll from Microsoft Corporation has caused an unknown exception (0xc015000f) on thread 0

Recommendation: Please follow up with vendor Microsoft Corporation for problem resolution concerning the following file: C:\WINDOWS\system32\ntdll.dll.

Type: Information

Description: DebugDiag determined that this dump file (devenv__PID__4248__Date__10_14_2010__Time_11_55_03AM__31__Second_Chance_Exception_C015000F.dmp) is a crash dump and did not perform any hang analysis. If you wish to enable combined crash and hang analysis for crash dumps, edit the CrashHangAnalysis.asp script (located in the DebugDiag\Scripts folder) and set the g_DoCombinedAnalysis constant to True.

Hi chip,

The previous one is the one I want, NTDLL doesn't tell me anything.

Remove that code, CR 4 VS 2010 is English only. As you can see you are trying to see a Read only property.

This is due to CR4VS2010 is currently only supported on English OS's and English version of VS 2010. Once we go GA it should have full language support, or at least what we typically support.

Thank you

Don

I'm sorry, Don, but i don't understand.

Remove what code from where? I haven't done anything that is non-english (That I know of).

Is this a VS setting or a CR setting?

Thanks

Hi Chip,

What does this mean:

You wrote:

"I had those environment variables set from a previous excursion into this problem. Here is the logfile:"

from the dump it appears something is trying to set local code page to another language:

TIMESTAMP THREAD_ID FILENAME LINE_NUMBER LOGGED_DATA LEVEL

2010-10-14 11:29:30.844 5172 .\QESession.cpp 445 Set Product View Locale: 1033 20

2010-10-14 11:29:30.844 5172 .\QESession.cpp 501 Set Process Locale: 1033 20

2010-10-14 11:29:30.844 5172 .\qecommon.cpp 117 This property is currently in a read-only state and cannot be modified. File Name: ".\QEProperty.cpp". Line: 217 1

Is this a Full version of VS 2010 or Express? What is your regional and language settings set to?

Something is tell CR to set the local code page, not sure what now though.....

I'll forward this link to the PM group to see if they have any suggestions...

Thanks gain

Sorry. That was probably an unnecessary bit of info, that I already had those environment variables set. I was referring to:

LOGGING_DIR = c:\logging

LOGGING_ENABLED_ASSERT = 1

LOGGING_ENABLED_RUNTIME = 30

that you had suggested that I set.

What I pasted into the message was from the c:\logging directory.

It is a full version of Visual Studio 2010 Professional. I can't imagine that the region/language would be anything but USA/English (I am not at work now, so I can't check)

Chip.

Hi Chip,

Only thing I can think of is the "OS came with Dell". I've seen this happen a few other times and even worked with Dell trying to figure it out. They said the only thing they do is change the start-up splash screen. But if you install from an off the shelf version of Windows it all works..... Something isn't being updated properly for the OEM version for Dell....

Do you have a MSDN or TechNet package from Microsoft to install a full version of the OS? If not you can actually install the OS and I believe you have a month to activate it. Might be something to test....

There's been a few people with this problem and so far we have not been able to figure out why or the cause.... Sometime one thing works for only that person....

What Anti-virus and firewall software are you using? Maybe that is the commonality to this issue if it's not the DELL OEM OS.

Thanks again

The VS language setting is English. The only other available setting is "Same as Microsoft Windows".

The Windows XP Regional Options setting is: English (United States).

Virus Protection:

McAfee Agent Version 4.0.0.1345

McAfee VirusScan Enterprise Workstation Version 8.7.0.570

I'll have to get back with you on the clean install of XP. It seems like a ridiculous hoop to jump through, but you kind of have me over a barrel. I feel kind of guilty that my employer should need to pay me for all this time that I am having to spend on this issue.

I understand that you are doing all you can and I appreciate it, though.

Hi Chip,

It is beta and the install scripts were no where near being completed with the Beta 2 release so this may all be for nothing. All I can suggest is you try it on a clean image or wait until the final build is available some time next month.

You could try adding devenv.exe to the trusted list in your anti-virus software.....

Thanks again

Is there any possibility that the collection of VS languages that I choose to install causes the problem? The only language that I install is Visual Basic.

Chip

Hi Chip,

When you say VS Languages you mean Dev Languages as in C#, C++ etc.?

Never thought of that possibility. We typically just install everything.....

I'll have to test that. But the Beta build is quite old now and the final release should be in 3 weeks or so so not sure if testing is justified.... But interesting suggestion....

If I get time I'll try it, I have to create a new image so it'll take time.

Thanks again

Hi Chip,

I discussed this with our resident .NET Guru who is also working with our developers and PM's and apparently this is a known issue. They've also discussed this with Microsoft and Microsoft doesn't know why this happens either. It's only in VB, C# and other dev languages work just fine.

Waiting for the final release doesn't seem to be the answer....

Thanks again

I can see how the collection of programming languages that is INSTALLED might make a difference, but I don't understand why the programming language that will eventually call the report would make a difference. When I am designing a Crystal Report, it is independent from the calling language and it does not seem like it would know what language will be calling it.

I'll try a full install and see if that fixes the problem. I may not get back with you on the results of this experiment until Monday.

Hi Don

You can tell your .NET Guru that he can pass the following solution along to the developers and PM's.

I just modified my VS 2010 installation, adding all of the programming languages that I had chosen not to install, and the problem has gone away. Maybe the developers can figure out what is missing in the VB-only installation and get it fixed before the final release.

False alarm. I declared the problem solved with not enough testing. It worked once.

I have some additional information that might point to the problem.

When I have Visual Studio running and I lock my computer and come back and unlock it, I get a message that an error has occured and Visual Studio must close. This happens more often than not, but not 100% of the time.

Sequence

I got the database expert to work once.

I locked my computer for a few minutes.

I came back and got the VS is closing message

The database expert is not working again.

Chip

Hi Chip,

That's a new one.... when it prompts to send the error report to Microsoft I suggest you do it... Seems like it's definitely a VS 2010 issue, why it's affecting CR database expert is very strange though....

And I don't believe this is a CR Install issue since it crashes VS on you, but may be. I'll pass the info onto the build team....

Thanks for the update.

What database?

What connection type (ODBC, OLE DB, etc.)

Have you tried to change the connection type?

Can you enable the option Verify on 1st Print?

32 or 64 bit?

What OS?

New symptom. If I try to create a new report using the wizard, VStudio crashes as soon as I hit the OK button to start the wizard. This crash DOES give me a warning box. Steps:

Visual Studio - add new item

Crystal Reports

<OK>

Microsoft Visual Studio has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Oracle 11G

Oracle Database (OracleClient)

I see "Verify on First Refresh" (checked) and "Verify Stored Procedures on First Refresh" (unchecked), but not verify on first print

32-bit

XP Service Pack 3

OK. So we have two issues:

1) Database Expert, Visual Studio "goes away" ... no delay

2) ...create a new report using the wizard, VStudio crashes as soon as I hit the OK button to start the wizard

??

What OS?

CRVS2010 installed after VS 2010?

Running [Process Monitor|http://technet.microsoft.com/en-ca/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx] may tell you what is going on re. files and or registry issues.
