Need of CAD & Microsoft Integration

Hi Gurus

I am very new to SAP DMS. Can anybody tell me why we need CAD & Microsoft Office Integration. I have searched in internet but I couldnu2019t get the clear answer. I am very confused. Please help me.

Hi Harshini,

What's the client requirement? Only they want to display the cad files without having autocad installed on their system?

I think they want save licences for autocad or may not have sufficient licences. For this, you need to install ECL Viewer6 with Patch. It's free of cost and availble on sap marketplace. You can download and install on each PC where the autocad will get opened. It will open even though no autocad software installed.

Thanks .... Actually the drawings will be updated by the contractors. They will have a software installed in their PCs for editing the drawings and they have the authorization to access the documents in SAP DMS. Once the drawings are updated then the revised document will be uploaded into SAP DMS.

The requirement of our client is not only viewing the documents.

Hi Harshini,

Now I got your requirement. You are giving access to contractors for the documents uploaded by client , for displaying these document you need to install ECL Viewer6.0 with patch on contractors PC's. Afterwards contractors will save these drawings on their system and edit it. Then they will upload the new version in SAP DMS. Means contractor require create authorization also, assign creator role to contractors.

You need to do two things:

1. Install ECL Viewer6.0 with patch on contractora PC's. and

2. Assign creator role to contractor's sap user ID's.

Thank you so much.... It will resolve .... we have the issue that the contractors are not too much familiar with ECL and they don't want to use ECL viewer. They are using different software ( Visio) to create / edit the drawings.Can you please guide me how can we solve this problem.

Hi Harshini,

ECL viewer is used to display the documents stored in SAP DMS. This I told you for the reason that contractors may have access authorization but can't display autocad files without ECL viewer.

Ok, now for editing they need to save or copy files from DMS to their PC's and then they can edit it by using the software which is availble on their PC's ( Visio). or you may use another suitable softwares also which can help in editing the autocad files.

So , ECL Viewer and VIsion are used for different purposes. Editing is not possible in SAP, you need to do it from your desktop which is changing the versions of documents.
