Hello,

We have upgraded our SAP ECC6 u201CSendboxu201D on Oracle 11 from 10.2.0.4. As a part of the upgrade process we extracted Oracle 11 RDBMS software and patch sets and installed both on our u201CSendboxu201D. We ran pre-upgrade script for Oracle11 and DBUA utility to actually convert/upgrade the contents or Oracle database on u201CSendboxu201D. The RDBMS and Patch set extraction and installation tool bit longer.

We are now planning to upgrade our next ECC6 u201CDEVu201D system on same release u201COracle 11u201D with the exact same procedure followed for u201CSandboxu201D upgrade.

Question is :

u201CIs it possible that instead of extracting and installing Oracle 11 RDBMS and patch sets on DEV system, we just copy /oracle/SID/112_64 and /oracle/stage/112_64 from u201CSandbox to DEVu201D and only run Oracle 11 DBUA utility on to convert/upgrade the contents of DEV database?u201D We are looking at making all necessary changes on DEV which will not be included in coping above file systems.

Does anyone have any experience?

Thanks,

Harshal

Yes, I agreed with Volker's update.

This is not a recommended way of Oracle upgrade supported by SAP, Read and follow standard DB upgrade guide.

And that is also not a time consuming method.

Hi,

it can be done. The term you have to look for at Metalink is called ORACLE_HOME - cloning.

The very problem is: It is not supported in SAP environment.

Since the lack of a working oracle Inventory, you are not able to apply an interim-patch to a cloned ORACLE_HOME.

Instead you have to apply it on your ORACLE_HOME-master and copy everything over again.

I assume that is why SAP is against this way of distributing executables.

So I'd recommend not to do it this way.

Volker

Just rechecked note 105047, which in the current version disallows ORACLE_HOME sharing.

It also disallows cloning at Item #35
