Item Category Usage

Dear Seniors,

Please help me in proper understanding of the field "Usage", in Item Category Determination, also from where exactly its functionality is derived, Ex:How does the system recognizes the usage is "Free", what if i give ABCD in place of free,i mean how does the system know that it should be "Free only"

Hi Rais,

Item Category Usage- It is just a text which is used in the item category determination forumula. It just tells the system that this particular item is used for this transaction. For Ex: if the item is FREE item the usage comes to be free item. As you have asked if you want ABCD to be used instead of "FREE" then go to IMG>>SALES & DISTRIBUTION>>SALES>>SALES DOCUMENTS>>SALES DOCUMENT ITEM>>DEFINE ITEM CATEGORY USAGE

So go to new entries define ABCD and enter description as free goods item and then assing the same in item category determination.

I had tried doing this by removing Free and Giving ABCD, but it only recognizes the functionality of free. So my question is where is the functionality of Free Derived from.

Dear,

An Item categories usage is defined by SAP when creating a sales order. The system determines,

for example, that the usage refers to a text item as opposed to a deliverable item when you enter test in the order item rather than a material number. Based on this usage, the system will use the item category determination to propose an item category.

You can see all of the item category usage indicators in SPRO> SD > Sales > Sales Docs > Sales doc items > Define Item cat usage

Example:

For Material Determination

Usage we use is PSHP for Displaying Main Items

Usage we use is PSEL for Displaying Sub Items

This usage we use for OUTCOME

Outcome: outcome controls whether substituted material

Should be replaced or displayed as sub items.

For Free Goods

Usage is free

Configure these usages in VOV4.

Hi Rais

To add on to what Kiran said, the system determines the pricing by the settings of the item category. System does nothing to determine automatically from the usage you have maintained.

Dear Indranil,

Thanks for your response, as i mentioned it gives error message if you do not maintain usage as "Free" while working on Free goods, the system only understands "Free" but not any other if we replace that for Free

Please suggest if you need more clarification on the question

Hi Ahmed,

Good question. As I understand FREE - usage is a standard one. And as you said if its not used Free goods functionality does'nt work ie the condition records for free goods are not picked. Apart from this you can define usages in IMG >SPRO and maintain them at customer material information record.

Thanks, but in my scenario i am not using CMIR, and i would like to have a very clear idea about "usage" coz it is very long pending doubt

Hi RaisAhmed,

If you are only talking about the free item(usage),then we have to first complete the condition technique for free goods and the then the item category determination as Mr.Kiran has explained.Without completing the condition technique the system will not propose a free good even if the item category is determined.For ex:ORNORMUSAGETANTANN, gives item category Tann in the sales document.If you want to further clarity place the cursor on the field usage and press F1,you will get some idea.

Dear Rais,

Even if you give any name other than free,as i told we have to first maintain the condition technique and then we have to maintain the condition records in VBN1 for the condition type NA00,we need to specify whether the free goods are internal or external.Then the system picks the free goods into the sales document.I hope this will help you.
