Accessing on-premise data using BIOD

We are looking for some information on BI on demand. I understand that there is a hosted (in the cloud) data warehouse. But how about if we want to access the data which is in our premise (I mean not in the SAP cloud). My questions is - can wedevelop Universes on BIOD which connects to local (on-premise) data instead of the hosted data warehouse?

For example let us say we have a local Data Warehouse maintained internally, but we would like to use BIOD to develop Universes and WEBI reports accessing this local data warehouse. Is that possible given that data is behind our firewall and the BIOD is hosted in the cloud outside the firewall.

Thanks in advance for any clarification on this.

This is not possible at this time for BIOD to connect inside a firewall to an on premise database. We are looking into this for a future release in the Q2 2011 timeframe.

I asked because you don't have the SAP badge on your name, thanks for clarifying. 😊

I was able to dial into the initial press conference where the BI OnDemand service was relaunched in February. (I say "relaunched" because the service itself was not new, it had been out for a while.) During the Q&A session I am fairly certain that folks asked about licensing, and it was mentioned that we could license for internal use rather than relying on SaaS. I have been using the web site to demo the features on a smaller data set, but expected to be able to use the full framework on an internal server, giving users the capability to upload their own worksheet data and so on through the framework that SAP has provided.

I will have to update my information given your clarification that we cannot do that.

For those interested, here's a link to the press release related to what I am talking about.

There doesn't seem to be a link to the recorded conference call which would contain the Q&A I mentioned.

    Hi Aaron,

I am keen to learn if the question/response on BIOD to connect inside a firewall to an on premise database has progressed any further - you mentioned Q2 2011 timeframe.?

    • Hi Vip,

The plans that Aaron mentioned for Q2 2011 didn't happen although they have not been abandoned. They are still in the works though.

The earliest possible release would be Q2 2012. Although a lot can change between now and then that could alter that plan.
