Material in SAP MM ?

Hi,

We are having a discussion with a company that will use FICO, MM and PM if all material shall have a material number in the system or if some consumables, e.g gloves etc, should be purchased as text instead of having a material number. Appreciate any input to this. Advantages-disadvantages ?

Thanks !

If materials are of one time usage with direct consumption then you can opt for text,

for regular materials with stock & value you can use material number.

Hi,

Better go for material number for your consumable items like gloves ,shirts, pants etc with a material type and you can used as non-stock item ( ND-MRP type).Where you have advantage of maintaining different materials of different sizes( like gloves small, gloves medium, gloves large, shirts small, shirts medium, shirts large etcu2026.) with same material type at the end you have reports on your hand which department consumed how much & order placed for particular material etcu2026. If you maintain text in PO for the above items explained, you can not have proper reports at the end.

Hi,

The followings are pros and cons for your request.

Advantages of using material master

1.Reduces the repetetive tasks such as setting G/L A/C and choosing material groups in procurement processes.

2.The material can easily be tracked in the reports and stocks.

Drawback of using material master

1.Time consuming task.

2.Some times, it is necessary to create material with brand and other attributes to process them accurately.

hi,

You can do that either way...but do you need to pay and maintain accounts for the same...Do you need to procure it ?? and then pay to vendor, then better go for with material number...You can also set accounts for it..

Also do you need to maintain stocks for it?? yes, then with mtrl. no...

but on the other hand if this not much important, n you don't count the material how much is used or consumed or req. then you also go for material no. as well...
