Can't assign a Material No. to Cust Packaging that contains only numbers

Greetings, friends in SAP.

After hours of investigation I have seen this problem in several threads, but not a solution:

We have a customer who is using returnable packaging material that is all numbers, say Packaging Material "12345". That number must appear on the ASN and Bill of lading. We normally assign our internal packaging material number to be the same as the customer's packaging material number.

If Material Type LEIH has "External No. assignment w/o check" ticked, SAP tells me "With this material type, ext. material no. must not contain only numbers", so I can't create Packaging Material "12345".

If it is not ticked, I can only select the next available value in the range assigned to LEIH.

My only solution is to create a Zxxx Material Type, copying LEIH, with number Range from 12345 to 12345.

I can't believe that is the only way to do this. Is there any other way?

Thanks in advance,

Dave
