Client Export/Import and Upgrade

Hi all,

If we do a client copy or export import of the master data from source system to target system and then do the technical Upgrade on the tragte system with only master data (Upgrade from 4.0 to 7.0 Version) will it work and is this method possible.

Please let me know your inputs.
