APO and Industry Solutions

I am currently reading "Production Planning with SAP APO" and I am confused about a blurb on Industry Solutions in Chapter One. It reads...

"...SAP APO also comprises processes that only come into play when used with one or more industry solutions. For example, integrated Product and Process Engineering, which is contained in SAP APO, cannot be used in a core SAP ECC System but can be used with the Discrete Industries solution."

What does this mean? Would it be like spare parts planning for the Automotive Industry? What is a Discrete Industry? Where can I find more literature about Industry Solutions for Pharma/Bio Manufacturing?
