You can install java as non-unicode.

As for the stack trace...

It looks like the portal is doing a call to "DDIF_FIELDINFO_GET" (Data Dictonary Interface). The portal makes these call get meta data (Data types, length, etc) for the RFC its about to call. Its sap delivered code that isnt expecting that exception...

Thats all I can really tell. Creating a sap message may be the next step, forwarding the stack trace from ABAP...

Good luck,

Tom

Hi Tom,

The issue got resolved. The issue was due to system connection being to non unicode as you had anticipated.Thanks.

This is my initial reaction,

The portal is trying to get dictoany information from ABAP (information about the data types) and is getting an error because One system is configured with unicode and one is non-unicode. If I were dealing with this situation I would:

1. Review the portal and ECC6.0 install to see if they were installed with unicode or non-unicode

2. Review the latest kernel patch, and ensure nothing went wrong there.

3. Run this (unicode / non-unicode issue / error by a good BASIS resoruce

4. Open a message with SAP.

I don't think debugging the issue further will help, one of your last posts pretty much explains it all.

Have you been able to run RFCs to this system successfully at all?

Tom

Hi Tom,

You have been very cooperative, thanks for being kind.My ECC is unicode but not sure about the portal whether it is unicode or non unicode.

Dumb question do we have a concept of non unicode in Java stack.

What do you make of the dump that i had poster earlier.

Dear

The RFC_ERROR_SYSTEM_FAILURE and 500 Internal error is a common error and it has lots of reason . so kindly pls go to ST22 TCODE and see the ABAP dump and past here so that i can provide the solution. Before that i have faced this type of error.

Thanks

Hi,

The dump that we are getting in the ECC system is pasted as below.

Runtime Errors RFC_CONVERSION_FIELD

Date and Time 09.09.2010 15:03:42

Short text

Conversion error between two character sets.

What happened?

Conversion error "ALL_TYPES" from character set 4102 to character set 4103

A conversion error occurred during the execution of a Remote Function

Call. This happened either when the data was received or when it was

sent. The latter case can only occur if the data is sent from a Unicode

system to a non-Unicode system.

Information on where terminated

Termination occurred in the ABAP program "SAPLSDIFRUNTIME" - in

"DDIF_FIELDINFO_GET".

The main program was "SAPMSSY1 ".

In the source code you have the termination point in line 1

of the (Include) program "LSDIFRUNTIMEU02".

Also try logging into the backend system and doing an ST22. There may be an ABAP Error logged there that points to the issue.

If there is an error there, then you know the issue resides on the ECC system, otherwise its probably a portal issue.

If I am not sure where an ESS 500 error is coming from sometime I externall debug the issue:

1. Set up an ST05 trace (with RFC checked) on a portal user in the ECC system

2. Log into the portal with that user and navigate to the page your having the issue on.

3. in ST05 stop the trace and see what RFC that Iview is calling.

4. Have an ABAP programmer set up an external breakpoint in that RFC for that same user.

5. Log in to the portal again and navigate to that page.

6. The ABAP code will stop on the breakpoint and you can step through it to where the error occurs in the ABAP code.

It sounds like alot, but its very helpful with ESS issues that arise.

Also check that both the portal and the ECC system are unicode. It is important that they also both have the same Kernel version.

Tom

HI,

the message : "RFC_ERROR_SYSTEM_FAILURE: Conversion error between two character sets"

points to a problem with the character sets.

What is the language you are using ?

Is the backend system a unicode system ?

Kai

Yes the it is ECC 6 unicode. Is this anything do with this.Thanks.
