Transporting Metadata from not running system!!!

Former Member

Hi all,

I have a serious problem to solve. Our main system stop working in the day of the presentation of a demo The problem is that when we open the SAP Management Console and we try to start the system, the JSTART.EXE process hangs in the step "Synchronizing binaries".

This is a NetWeaver problem that I don't know how to solve it. I need to export/transport the metadata of the demo to another system, but without a running NetWeaver, I don't have access to the SSM Tools page in order to do that. My question is, how can a export that information in order to put in another system? It's possible to copy the MAXDB database file? What file should I copy (there is several MAXDB files in the harddisk).

System is running SSM7.5 SP6

Thanks in advance

Regards

Pedro Costa

Hi Pedro ,

Even my Netweaver didn't work before a demo !! The same issue of synchronizing binaries. The best way to trouble shoot the issue is to take a look at the Netweaver log files.

There were 2 issues which caused Netweaver problems for me :

1.) The buffer in the MaxDB instance is full. I did not set the settings to automatically clear the buffer. When I restarted the Netweaver , the Jstart.exe doesnt start up. Please check this setting .

2.) The same issue arised when the Netweaver trial license was expired. I had to apply a full complete license for the Netweaver to start again.

Hope this helps

Vijay,

Great advice!

When a Netweaver license expires, you still should get NWCE to start up, it only stays on for a 1/2 hour before shutting down - to give you time to apply the new license.

Since Pedro can't even get it open, it's probably not a license issue.

So, if the problem is CE shutting down all the time it's likely a license issue.

Let's find out if he is using MaxDb, it is probably some issue with his db, whatever he is using.

Hi Vijay and Bob,

thanks both for your answer's. Sorry for the late reply, but at home I did not have my log on details...

Because of the urgency of the situation, last Friday we have to take the decision, of reverting the server the the last made backup, that did not have all the work we made for the demo. So it was a long weekend redoing everything. At least now it's done and the SSM/NetWeaver it's working again.

Going back to the problem, we are using MAX DB as our system database.

Vijay, where can I check that setting of the MAXDB cache?

This is not related with the NW license, we are not using a trial

PS: This is not the first time this happens. The first time we work with SAP Support, but after some days without real help, we us the "solution" of the backup again. At that time, they say the probem with was probably caused by a memory setting, but I change that as they suggest, and on last Friday it happens again...

Hi Pedro ,

I am sure you can resolve all the issues. Don't worry mate !!! No license is required for MaxDB. It comes bundled with the SAP Netweaver. You can check this setting in the database manager. You need to install this piece of software to monitor the functioning of the database instance.

Hope this helps

Pedro,

What I suggest is that you go to Windows Services and Stop and Restart the service 'MAXDB: CE1' (with CE1 being the default name of the instance, your name may be different).

There will be a number of MAXDB service, but that is the only one you should restart. That service should also be set for AUTOMATIC, and if this is not the case, make sure you change it from Manual to Automatic.

If your MaxDb cache is corrupted, this service may already be stopped and may not restart. Successfully restarting may help solve your problem.

Bob

Hi Bob,

I remember I did the restart of the MAXDB service several times (I did that in order to copy the MAXDB database to another server to see if it will be possible to recover the metadata), but even the several stop/start of that service, the problem still happens.

I'm still trying to see how to clear the MAXDB cache entry...

Thanks

Pedro

Hi Pedro,

I don't know how to copy DBs or DB files, but if you are having problems starting your NWCE, you should first verify if the DB is running. If not, then the NWCE can't start and perhaps it will also make it difficult to access DB tables for any other kind of export.

Hi Ricardo,

DB is running, I test that in the SAP Management Console The problem is that without the Java stuff up and running the Transport tool don't work....

Pedro,

When you are starting CE, does it run for only a minute before it stops? If so, you need to check your Hosts files to make sure you have the right IP address. That is the most common problem when CE stops if you are running off a VM.

Hi Bob,

the problem is that the NW CE don't even start. It stucks in the JSTART.EXE "Syncronizing binaries"....

It looks like the only option is the revert to a backup and re-do all the metadata of the demo :S

Pedro,

Okay, NWCE not running will prevent you from getting into SSM or Tools. There are several common problems that I have run into with CE not starting.

1) Host File - You have to make sure that the ip address of the machine is correct in the Hosts file. This is especially important if you are using a VM and your ip address can change. If the ip address for the local host has NOT changed, you do not need to do this.

Check your local host ip address and then go to -

Go to <drive>:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc hosts and open in Notepad

There are instruction in hosts that tell you how to include your ip address for local host.

Save and exit.

2) Corrupted Cache - sometimes the MaxDb can get a corrupted cache and you there are some steps to get that going.

Are you using MaxDb?

3) Compressed files in MaxDb - again another MaxDb situation. Are you using MaxDb?

Bob
