Okay ... I will try to explain it in simple words:-
UKMS comes handy when we want to translate master and transactional data. For example- say there are two systems- one SAP and another non-SAP. The master data in SAP stores values in a different way than the transactional data stored in non-SAP system, but they represent the same "item". UKMS supports this kind of functionality.
UKMS also supports synchronization and replication of master data. For example- there are multiple source systems having master data, and one target system. With master data replication, new master data objects in the source systems are transferred to the target system. Master data synchronization ensures that the master data in the source systems matches the master data in the target system. UKMS supports only N:1 mappings but not 1:N.
UKMS cannot be used for harmonizing the master data (improve data quality, recognize duplicates and so on) transferred to the target system.
In order to use UKMS, you will be required to do few settings in these areas:- SAP WAS ABAP, SAP PI and the application system.
