Hi
I need to know the difference between process and discrete manufacturing environment.
Also, what SAP PP offers to cater both environments?
Plz help.

A very good example that someone gave me during my initial days in SAP was something like this & I found it a v useful one for that:
1. Discrete - Think of it being used in processes where a finished product, once produced can be broken back (dis-assembled) into the parts/assemblies/components that it was originally made out of. Any electronic, Automotive, etc prod would fit that category.
2. Process - Think of it being used in processes where a finished product, once produced cannot be broken back (dis-assembled) into the parts/assemblies/components that it was originally made out of. Any chemical, drug, beverage, food prod etc prod would fit that category.
One could in no way retrieve pulp, carbondioxide, water, coloring agents even if you try to decompose a Fruit drink/Cola/Ade
hope it helps
cheers

But what features SAP offers so we can distinguish both the industries. Say, we use Recipe for Process and Routing for Discrete. Which fields or features differentiate between these two? Or in other words what different features are offered in PP node and PP-PI node?
So we can exploit the functionality to cater the relevant manufacturing environment.
** **
** FEATURES **
** PP PP-PI **
** availability check for PRT- Yes( PP) No(PP-PI) **
** Order splitting- Yes( PP) No(PP-PI) **
** Trigger point - Yes(PP) No(PP-PI) **
** Order approval- NO ( PP) Yes(PP-PI) **
** process management**
*( control receipe and*
**PI sheet)- NO ( PP) Yes(PP-PI) **
** digital signature- NO ( PP) Yes(PP-PI) **
** material qty calculation- NO ( PP) Yes(PP-PI) * *

Thanks Sundaresan, what about difference b/w routing & recipe?
Also, if anyone can narrate these differences using practical business processes/terminology. say, material quantity calculation helps implementation of active ingredient functionality in pharma industry by automatically suggesting adjusted quantity requirement of excipient using actual potency of active ingredient batch. so maintaining the target weight of product at required level.
Dear
The difference b/w Routings and Master Recipe are as follows:
Routing:
1) Routing is used for discrete manufacturing in production industries.
2) There is no phases used in routings.
3) Control key PP01, PP02 used in routing.
Master Recipe:
1) Master Recipe is used for the production process industries (PP-PI)
2) Here different pahses are used in single operations in the master recipe.
3) Control keys PI01, PI02 are used in master recipe.
With Master Recipe you can use the features of Process management like PISheets/Control Recipe etc.. ,which you cannot use with Routing.
let me know any clarification.
Regards

Hi Chrish,
A ) In Pharma the requirement of Key raw material's ingredient will differ based on the active ingredient of other component for key raw material to achieve desired result .
say A + B -
> C where in A is the key raw material
100 Kg -
>>> 100 Kg yield where in 100% of A & 50 % B gives 100 % C
In case A is 90 % and the extra quantity will be consumed from B
In the BOM we have MQC in that formula could be defined for making this balance
B ) difference between Routing and recipe is that In routing we have Operations but in recipe we have Operations & Phases
and Operations are assigned to the secondary resources
In recipe we can assign Pi sheet But not in routing .
recipe have MQC tab but routing dont
In Routing the Qty is fixed for desired output But in Recipe the input quantity varies based on Active ingredients of the components
I hope you understand pl come back if you have any doubt

Hi,
In Discrete-It is used in automotive, electronic, airplanes etc.
1)Material Master
2) BOM
3)Routing
4)Work Center
5)Production Order
6)Control Key PP01, PP02
In Process industry -It is used in Chemical,Pertochemical, pharmasutical etc.
1)Material Master
2) BOM
3)Recipes
4)Resource
5)Process order
6)Control Key PI01, PI02
Hope this will help u.

This is one of the features I came across on the net -
SAP PP - Discrete Manufacturing - Discrete manufacturing forms an industry type where in the products which are manufactured can be easily assembled and dis-assembled. They can be reworked upon easily to a large extent. Eg: making pumps, engines, cars, airplanes.
SAP PP-PI - Process Manufacturing - Process manufacturing forms an industry type where in the products which are manufactured cannot be easily assembled and dis-assembled. It is impossible to be reworked upon these products. Eg: making chemicals, medicine, Paper, Steel etc.
Discrete manufacturing is generally lot oriented manufacturing. Also, note that in an SAP instance you can have both discrete and process manufacturing order types and processes in parallel
