User Status to trigger email

Is there a way to have User Status in Work Notification trigger email if selected.

For example we create a "Rejected" status, If manager decided to reject a Work Notification the creater of the WN will be notified by email.

(Note:We are not utilizing the Work FLow..we are using user status as our process.)
