Export to .pdf gives hexadecimal block characters for text

The report exports OK -- but the font is light very low contrast and the text are all hexadecimal 'block' type characters. I've tried different fonts, and think I'm using true type fonts (how can I be sure?); but the I can't get it to work. I don't see any previous posts for this problem

    What version of CR?

Does the export work in the CR designer and this issue is from a .NET app?

What CR updates have you applied?
