Does the Portal Upgradation needs underlying HR system upgradation?

Hi Experts,

Our Portal is planning to go live with IE 8.0 very soon.

Our current EP version: EP 7.0 SPS9

Already proposed for Portal Patch Upgrade.( IE 8.0 is supported from SPS20) after referring PAM (Product Availability Matrix).

As we are only upgrading the Portal to the service pack 20. The underlying HR system is not getting upgraded. We need to see if any compatibility issues would be coming up.

Current HR system details are: Release 600, Level 0005

1. So, can you please suggest me does the HR system upgration is necessary?

2 If YES, to which level it has to be upgraded?

If you are using portal applications in ESS,MSS which interacts with backend then in that case you definitely have to upgrade your backend system as well
