Planning Strategy help

Hello, I need some advice. I have a Configurable material (FERT) with VC that has a requirements plan containing 2 planning variants (strategy 54). I have 3 Characteristics defined as Required for Planning, and the Customer Orders consume the correct Planning Variant's PIR based an their values in those 3 characteristics, if received prior to the firm fence. But when we get slow we over plan and have PIRs that do not have customer orders to consume them prior to the firm fence and we have to zero out those requirements. Instead, I would like to be able to build these to stock and consume to a fully configured customer order when received.

We want a MTO strategy, but when we don't have orders I want to MTS option also, but I cant get any of my testing scenarios to work as expected. Please point me to appropriate documentation.

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

    Dear Ms.Jennifer Jones,

Usually I use strategy 40 where when we don't have sales order, SAP will calculate production plan based on PIR.

Maybe you can use that strategy too.

    Thanks and regards

Can you still use planning variants with strategy 40? I haven't been able to get the PIRs to consume correctly (I plan to 2 configurations of my configurable material) and with strategy 40, all my customer orders consume to only one of my Planning Variants PIRs even if the configuration of customer order matches the other Planning Variant.

I've been reading through Material Variant Documentation... but cant get the customer orders to consume correctly based on the Planned Orders Configuration either. Not sure what I am doing wrong...

I cant figure out how to use a Planning Variant and MTS. I have tried mixing 54/52 and 54/40 but it still wont consume how I want it.
