[Bug]Q&A comments - wrong sort order

Jelena
Active Contributor

I've always assumed the comments are sorted in the chronological descending order but in this case am not sure what the order is. Reply to my comment ('16 hours ago') appears above my comment ('17 hours ago'). Comment content redacted for clarity in the bitmap, original question is here.

The comments should be displayed in the same order as they were posted IMHO. Otherwise we'd need a sort button, like for the answers.

And after some time it looks even "better"

P.S. I prefer to have hierarchy of comments! Timestamp will not help if you reply to different comments...

vadim.kalinin - yeah, I'd prefer the hierarchy too, otherwise I have to scroll all the way up, find Comment button and then @-mention you while pretending I'm replying to myself. 🙂

Also I'd prefer to see all the comments, not just the last 1-2 with "Show All" underneath. You read this and have no idea what this person is even talking about. Then "Show All" and oooh, there is the whole conversation going on.

But I guess these days to get such functionality (which worked fine before and no one asked to change AFAIK) we must go to the Customer Influence site.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"go to the Customer Influence site..." - no way! It's against the Stackoverflow design 🙂

Aint' it funny that the comments as shown here expose exactly the same so-called feature..:)

(Currently, Jelena's reply to Vadim's comment "And after some time it..." is shown above that, whereas Vadim's reply "go to..." is shown beneath.)

Updated the title. This clearly seems like a bug. Can this be possibly fixed? The comments look beyond bizarre now: one person asking the other two for their guidance but then the actual guidance appears several comments down.

Hi Jelena, can you share links to discussions that have this error? We released a fix to correctly display the order of the comments last week. The link in your question is displaying comments in the correct order to me. I want to identify if this issue still persists. Thanks in advance.

Even in this particular question with 7 comments the order is incorrect!

Hi Vadim, for me the comments are displayed in the correct order. Having said that, I checked with several colleagues from different timezones and some of the them could see the comments in incorrect order. I'll take this back to IT. Thanks

claudia.pacheco - in this same thread the comments are shown out of order for me (February 1st comes before January 31st but then further the comments are shown in descending order):

In this question, we can also see that the "thank you" comment appears first, then below it are the comments that are being thanked for. It's more difficult to see the timestamps today because they all just say "yesterday".

Another screenshot from the same ABAP question, this is just wacky:

Thanks for the screenshots. We'll look into it.

Hi Claudia,

do you need more examples to narrow this down? If yes, I can provide some from other threads where I've seen this as recently as today.

Interesting! This is where my comment from a short while ago ended up in this thread:

As this is apparently still not resolved, here is another recent example of randomized instead of proper sort order:

Link to thread

If this were a HANA-DB in the background, I'd say that an "ORDER BY [posting timestamp]" is missing in the SELECT (but I guess - and judging from the long time it takes to resolve this - that it's not quite as easy as that!).

Are you still seeing the problem? I don't currently see it...

Hi Iris,

yes, the screenshot is how it looks like for me today in the answers of that thread. Is it possible that there's some actual randomizing involved when discussions are accessed and displayed so that different people see different things haphazardly? Could perhaps some timezone settings play a role - and not just the timezone of the current viewer but also the timezone of who added a comment/answer?

Not sure @claudia.pacheco is this possible?

Just to confirm - even the original post referenced in this question https://answers.sap.com/questions/742212/bug-former-member-or-not-former-member.html is still showing incorrect order!

Mine shows the proper order...

May be it's shown correctly only for SAP employees 🙂

Or may be some other reason!...

But a lot of Community users can see this issue!

Hi jelena.perfiljeva2, 8b889d0e8e6f4ed39f6c58e35664518f, vadim.kalinin,
We just deployed a fix. Can you check if the comments show correctly for you now?

former_member186338

I can confirm that now the order is correct at least in a few tests!

oddss

Hi Audrey,

yes, the comments in "my" thread now look as if they are in the actual order they were posted in.

Thanks & Cheers
