xcelsius 2008 export flash player 10.1 blank

I have a number of Xcelsius 2008 sp3 dashboards that displayed correctly in powerpoint 2003 after exporting. We then upgraded from flash player 10 to flash player 10.1 and the flash embedded objects now display as a blank screen.

We can't go back to flash player 10 due to a security flaw but now all these dashboards across the company have stopped working.

Anyone know a fix or work around?

Many thanks

Just wanted to add that this only happens for flash files made using Xcelsius. Embedding and sharing powerpoint files with other flash files works normally...

It would nice to know if this is a Flash Player issue or an Xcelsius issue.

I have tested with non-xcelsius generated flash movies and haven't been able to replicate the issue...

Do you see the dashboard when you view the ppt as a slide show?

We are seeing the same issue on our systems. All the systems pre Flash 10.1 still work fine...

    - If you view the presentation in "slide show" mode, you can right-click where the content should be and see that the Flash player is running...but it is just a blank white screen.

    - After this started, I downgraded my system to Flash 10.0.45.2 (uninstall 10.1, reboot, install 10.0.45.2, reboot) and the issue is still happening.

    - If you take an existing .swf flash file and embed it in Powerpoint, the new presentation appears to work...but existing presentations don't open.

Any ideas or fixed would be greatly appreciated.

From some testing, it appears to be the "EmbedMovie" variable that is causing the issues (when using Flash 10.1). If I embed a flash movie using these instructions:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/powerpoint-help/play-a-macromedia-flash-animation-in-powerpoint-HA001034807.aspx

If "EmbedMovie" is set to "False" and the flash file is on the local disk or a webserver, everything works as expected.

If "EmbedMovie" is set to "True" and the flash file is on the local disk or webserver...it will import properly the first time. As soon as the file is saved and closed, things get screwed up. It can't be reopened on that same computer, or any others...

      > Even if I manually embed the swf, it only renders the first time. If I close and reopen it doesn't render.

I retract this statement. I retested today and it is working for me.

I manually export from XC to a swf then insert the swf into a new PowerPoint file. It renders regardless of whether the EmbedMovie Property is true or false.

Ok, I stumbled across the 10.1 Flash issue with Powerpoint generated by Xcelsius yesterday (such bad timing as it was for a new customer) and I have a workaround that doesn't involve uninstalling 10.1 and reinstalling 10.0 or earlier and suits my needs but may not suit everyone, here goes .....

Fact 1) When I export to ppt from Xcelsius and view the presentation it works, when I save this file and reopen it doesn't work.

Fact 2) Filesize of generated ppt indicates that Flash presentation is indeed embedded.

Fact 3) ppt will not open on other machines with Flash 10 or with Office 97 or earlier ( I use 2003).

My workaround is to simply point to the file, not embed with a few simple tweaks thrown in (variations on this will be obvious but for laziness I do the following) ......

    1) Export the Xcelsius presentation to Powerpoint as usual

    2) Also save the Xcelsius presentation in native Flash (swf)

Note ... Files involved in points 1 & 2 above must be saved to the same folder.

    3) Open the saved Powerpoint presentation (that now doesn't work using 10.1)

    4) Open the properties for the flash object and ......

    a) Set EmbedMovie property to FALSE

    b) Set Movie property to .\<your file name .swf>

    c) Set Playing property to TRUE (not sure this property matters but I set it anyway)

    5) Save and close the ppt, then reopen and try again, it should work now as long as the .swf file is in the same folder as the Powerpoint file.

Conclusion : An embedded Xcelsius Flash object now doesn't work with 10.1, linked is ok.

    Hope this helps someone.

    😊

Bug has been fixed by Adobe, just need to wait for them to actually release the next version of Flash.
