Dual Sourcing

When a Sales order is created, the business wants to go on the sales order and manually change the plant. The requirement is that when the plant is changed from A to B, the item category should change from AAA to BBB on its own. How should I go about it? Should I use the user exit_save_ document or is there any simpler solution.

May be you can use 'Usage' field, It is there in Item Sales A tab of the sales order. Define a few Z item usages or you may use standard ones too. Since Usage figures in Item cat Assignment config, you can drive different usages to determine different item cats. Now I leave it to you on how to populate the usage field in the order- a) User changes in the order, simple or, b) User exit MV45AFZZ- USEREXIT_MOVE_FIELD_TO_VBAP based on plant entered.
