Sales BOM

The sales bill of materials represent a finished product which is assembled at the sales stage. Both the finished product and the components appear as separate items in the sales order document.

For example, the finished product can be a set of garden furniture. Use the sales bill of materials to define the composition of the set. The finished product is not stored as an entire set in the warehouse. However, the individual components of the set (for example, garden chairs, tables, and umbrellas) are items in stock. If a customer buys a set of garden furniture, draw the components from stock and deliver them to the customer as a set.

For the sales BOM, you do not manage the finished product as an inventory item, but rather as a sales item. The components can also be sales and stock items in their own right. When you create the delivery to dispatch the customeru2019s order, the components are backflush issued from stock.

Template BOM:

You use the template bill of materials to allow changes to components when you create a sales document for the finished product. You can update the quantity of a component, swap components, or delete them in the BOM or sales order. In that case, the components appear below the parent as a list of items in a sales document.

NOTE : Deciding which of these bills of materials to use depends on the scope of variation and the level at which the customer needs information. For a product like a gasket set or a service kit for a universal joint, the assembly bill would be appropriate because the customer will not expect to check each component in the acknowledgement of the order. For a garden furniture set, or a set of hi-fi separates, where a fixed combination number of components is set by the item number compatible combinations exist, and the customer needs confirmation that the correct items are included, a sales bill could be recommended. For the same sort of product, but where there is too great a variation for a parent item in each case, but there is a group of common components which it would be time consuming to add to every sales order, a template bill may be the solution.
