simple re-label the tape. it will reset its usage count to 0

brbackup -i

note that 100 read/write is a big number and tape will eventually wear out... thus bringing risks of failed backups, or worse, unreadable backups.

Hi dude!

The parameter "tape_use_count" specifies the maximum number of times a volume can be written to. The default value is 100 but you can change it to whatever value you want; the important point here is that you stop writing your backups into that volume when it is not in a suitable condition anymore.

I take advantage to remind the huge importance of testing the backups already done. I guess that we have all been told stories about incautious administrators having unusable backups that theoretically were fine only because they didn't detect any warnings in the backup logs.

Cheers!!

answer:

it depends.

100 times is an average number.

I would not go over 100 times.

value of data on the tapes exceeds largely the cost of a tape.

as far as know, there are no tools to check health of a tape. this is why BR*tools counts the number of writes and includes it in the label on tape.
