Recognize the contributor

Former Member

Hi Friends,

I have always liked being active on SCN and encouraged my friends too..

The current system of recognizing contributor with points, subject matter experts and good networking guys with Mentors is good.

Was just thinking since everybody cannot have loads of points or become moderators to get noticed or recognized. Many a times in my experience on Forums I feel some one with just a total 10 points for example, gives an exceptionally good answer that it helps a consultant solve a complicated or difficult issue he is facing. He might be praying god or left no corner untouched to solve but does this with a good answer from SCN.

I want to recognize the contributor for answering such questions in a bigger way. I feel some times overwhelmed when a very big problem is overcome by an excellent timely answer and feel awarding 10 points is no match. Appreciating the contributor in the thread does'nt get noticed so much... so there should be some thing like I say a particular contributor received 10 appreciations/honors. May be he is having only 20 points, does not matter. Some one may be having 2000 points but more concerned only about points does not have any appreciation from fellow members or has one or two. I am not trying to make some one better but sincerely feel we can add more value to the existing system of recognition. As we discuss we might just come up with something more brialliant...

I would like to hear from my dear friends on this idea and come up with a good framework for recognition adding to what we already have.

Best Regards

Sadhu Kishore

Hi folks,

Thank you all for contributing to Sadhu's suggestion here, I think these are valid points. Indeed, contribution points are not the only way to recognize someone's participation on SCN. I agree that sometimes a "thank you" is worth a lot of points

I am currently working to refresh the current active contributor recognition program and I take some of the feedback that I see in the forums for my project.

An alternative to give or deduct point would be to vote for someone in the forum so that this person is considered for a kind of "SCN token of appreciation". As a thank you for providing exceptional answers, or a thank you for the work that moderators do, or a thank you for just being a valuable member of the community.

What do you think? Of course some members would always play with this and hit the button several times from different user IDs, so we would nee to think of a way to limit abuse.

This is just an idea here, let's keep brainstorming.

Best,

Laure

Hello Laure,

I have one more idea for you (and of course for the others). I would like to hear the opinions.

The points are cool, yes, but that cost yout nothing to give poi-nts. I mean you get points out of nowhere and assign the poi-nts to the user. Let´s keep it this way, but let´s add one more "contribution channel" - a personal one - the one where you think twice before giving anything and you give only those who are worth it. I mean... something like if one could give his points to the other member as a gesture of appreciation. Of course I don´t mean to remove the points from one guy and move them to the other one, but something like... you get one "personal appreciation po-int" for every hundred you get. And you can give these to the people that have been of a great help on SDN. Something like "I don´t have many of these, but I give you one, because your help was exceptional, thank you".

Place share your ideas on the above. I would like to have such way to say a "big thank you".

regards Otto

While I fully agree with your views, it is also the fact which is causing concern that many members who post question is not even bothering to close the threads with specific comments nor appreciating the contributor.

They just close the threads with some alphabets just because, they cannot kept open more than 10 threads.

Under the circumstances, I am not sure, on what criteria, recognition can be given by SDN Forum to the contributor. The recognition should in some way be measurable which is very difficult for the decision makers for the reasons explained here.

May be in each forum, SDN can invite opinions each month to nominate the best contributor in the respective forum

thanks

Any temporary status could be very motivating! (But we have top 3 in the forum in last 30, right?)

But I have another idea: let´s give some honor points:

- I woudl definitely give +1 to the subject matter expert who helped me to overcome some pretty big obstacle, saved my time or even the whole project etc.

- I would give -1 to people who don´t provide feedback, who don´t search etc.

I have heard that the moderators somehow keep the track of the forum violations and other problems with the user to judge him when an action is to be taken. But if the status would be public... The same system (+1, -1) is used on the auction sites for examples. And maybe not all user should be given the option to give these points.

I would give -1 to people who don´t provide feedback, who don´t search etc.

Nobody is worried about the negative points. Everybody knows how to create a new ID. This will increase the forum membership from two million to three million in just few months. Many problems get resolved only by keeping some restriction on creating the IDs.

Dear all,

Thanks a lot and I appreciate your feedback. As I see there are two things here,

1 - how to give more value or recognize a good contributor and

2 - how to tackle people who are lazy/cant/new to search, who are not bothered to close threads or appreciate contributor/give some feedback.

Since these are two big issues, my focus is mainly on point 1 here, reason being this forum is superb and rich because of such valuable talent which cant be missed. Its valid and utmost important to keep the forum healthy and clean by concentrating on point 2 which again helps point-1.

Lets try to get in ideas to recognize/honor a good contributor. We can pass this idea to SCN.

Why not add this to

Hi Rob,

Moving this thread to Suggestions for forum improvements is a good idea - but thats a very broad discussion going on at the moment. To arrive at a consensus on the topic being shared here, inorder to drive it guess we isolate this at the moment till we have more opinions and ideas.

Thanks
