Teradata with SAP BW/BI

Hello guys

I have been currently assigned a project in which client is using a teradata database,. This is brand new SAP implementation.

So far I have only worked / done extraction based on oracle and flat file source system but never had a chance to work on teradata.

I would appreciate if you advise me if there is something different or special measures that I need to consider while generating extractors based on teradata.

What is the step by step configuration when I create extractor based on this non-sap source system.

I would appreciate your reply,

Regards

and in bw side u have to create a UD connect .

there are many HOW TO GUIDES available on teradata sites.

plzz have a look there.

hope that will help u.

Hi Mrityunjay

Thanks for your reply.

I am just wondering, can I use DB connect as well as teradata is RDBMS system and DB connect suppots RDBMS source system.

Also, Is data available in teradata in shape of tables or in cubes because if it is in tables then I would understand to create view but if it is in cubes then pls advise your expert opinion on this either case, I would really appreciate your help as I am in a process of learning about teradata structure.

I would definately look into some How to Guide for teradata.

Thanks again and best regards.

HI Mrityunjay

Thanks again for the reply and good link.

A quick question:

Can you please let me know if we are extracting data from teradata to SAP BW, do we create extractor on teradata side or do we create it on SAP BW side. According to logic it should be on SAP BW but ....... if the source system supports the creation of datasource then we will create the datasource on SAP source system, such as COPA d/source, or any other generic extractor....... otherwise we will create datasource in BI side such as Flat File.

According to my understanding so far we create the datasource in BW side since we are going to use UD connect based on view.

I would appreciate if you shed some light on this , thanks and regards.

Hi,

If I understand correctly, you are going to use TD as database for your BW system. (This is obvious since TD is a DB optimized for data warehousing vs transactional systems)

First, I don't know to what extent this is supported. My impression was that TD support for SAP BW will come with later versions of BW, namely 7.2 or 7.3. But I maybe wrong.

Second point is that even if you are able to do this today, the extractor should be based in source system. Teradata as a databse should not affect your ability to use the BW extractors you have in business content or your ability to create the generic ones.

We are talking about two completely different layers in BW architecture. The DB layer and the application layer. And my opinion is that TD as Db layer should not affect the way application layer behaves. But I might be wrong and there might be things to consider which are specific to TD.

The way things work right now between SAP BW and TD are through a Java-stack based application called TIVAS. Where you create virtual cubes similar to BW cubes. Then load the BW data into TD. This way, you can continue using your BEX queries but with much better peformance improvement with a TD DB.

You are best advised to check this with TD.
