Dear All,
I am trying to do Remote client copy from Production to Dev system (two system landscape).Below is my hardware configuration of DEV and PRD system :
SAP - R/3 4.7(NU) , O/S - AIX , DB - ORACLE 9
PRD SYSTEM :
DATABASE Server
CPU - 2 (375 MHZ)
RAM - 3 GB
APPLICATION server
CPU - 2 (375 MHZ)
RAM - 2 GB
Database size of the Prd system is around 95 GB
DEV SYSTEM
CPU - 2 (375 MHZ)
RAM - 2 GB
I am doing test run first so that i can see if any errors come and also to estimate downtime of the PRD Server(as SAP recommends that no user should be login in target and source client while doing client copy).
From the last 24 hrs. it has just completed 2500 tables only. total tables are 27500 something(Non - Unicode system). Its running very slow....
Is there any way to improve the speed of Remote client copy ?
Else I am planing to do Export - Import of client.
Is there any way to estimate downtime of PRD Server while taking Export of client like In how much time Export of Source client will be completed....
Thanks & Regards,
Rohit
Your hardware is VERY small sized and have a very slow CPU. I wouldn't expect too much speed of either an export or a remote client copy.
A total system copy would be faster.

Hi Markus,
Hope you are doing well

Yeah that is what i also think ...I have few queries :-
1)I have offline backup of PRD System .Can I do a restore database (on already installed DEV System/ running Dev system) Through BRRESTORE ?
2)It would be backup of PRD system (data files are like according to PRD System) What changes i need to do?(control file, tns listener , etc)
3)Directory structure different will work ?
Thanks & Regards,
Rohit

yes

Just refer to the standard system copy guides and omit the "sapinst" part since your system is already installed.

Hi Rohit,
How many parallel processes are you using to perform this test run? I would use at least 10 parallel processes..
An client export is always running with one process, so I don't expect that this will be faster. However you can always just perform an export to get an estimation about the export time.
Kind regards,
Mark

Hi Mark ,
Thanks for your response.
If i will increase the no. of work processes (it can be done in scc9 >menu ->go to> no.of parallel processes) then what will be the impact of this on Production server(any harm) ?
Shall i do this now (cancel Test run and restart) ?
Thanks,
Rohit
Hi Rohit,
That depends on the power of your system.. If you are running a small SAP system with only 20 dialog processes, than 10 might even be too many.. When you receive complaints about the system performance, you can always just cancel the running session.
I'm not sure if a restart of your current session can be performed with more parallel processes, or that you have to run a complete new one..
Kind regards,
Mark

Mark,
I tried to cancel it but it was taking long time to stop so i had to restart the Remote client copy again but this time with 10 parallel processes ...Server is having 25 dialog processes and workload is not much because of weekend.
Thanks,
Rohit
Hi Mark,
Remote client copy is still working very slow. After 20 hrs. only 2584 tables completed its running Test Run with simulation.
I think remote client copy with just 2 Gb of Ram on Dev Server would work slow.
I am having 2 plans : -
1)Client export / import -But not sure how much time it will take to get export of PRD client .
2)Do a local client copy with sap_all on PRD Server (relatively much faster then remote client copy or Client export) and then take export of Newly copied so that users can continue there work on PRD Server.
I am just running out of time (can't do System copy as fresh OS not available) ....Kindly suggest .
-Rohit
Hi Rohit,
Too bad to hear that it is still taking a long time...
1. You can just perform an export while users are working. The impact on the system performance will be neglectible since it is only one process. After you know the runtime, you can plan one in a weekend.
2. Sounds good to me..
Be aware that you have sufficient space in /usr/sap/trans for your export files.
Kind regards,
Mark

Yeah it is

I think its not recommended to export client while users are working/logged in ..it will Effect the Export files(data files/ co files) may be inconsistent.

Yeah I have this in my mind to make enough space in trans Directory because it will create export files there.
-Rohit
Space in trans directory is low ...cant increase the size of that directory ....If we will take export of PRD system that is 95 gb database then i think we will require the same amount of free space in trans directory as well....
Any suggestion ? can we change the location of Export (datafile/cofile) files from trans directory to somewhere for temp. basis?
Kindly suggest.
Thanks ,
Rohit
Hi,
Goto STMS ==> Overview ==> Systems
Select desired System and double click on it...
Go to "Transport Tool" tab and change the path of "TRANSDIR" parameter...
Give the path where you have required free space. Make sure that it has the same permissions as /usr/sap/trans directory.
by default it will be "/usr/sap/trans".
After Export you should revert it to default...

I want to go for the process you suggested.
I have a question for this;
1. My DEV server is the domain controller and when I login to my PRD server and run the command df -k (it shows /usr/sap/trans directory mounted to DEV server).
So if I change the location trans directory through STMS (system overview DEV-->Transport tool) will it get updated for PRD or I need to restart the machine DEV or PRD. do I need to do anything else like mounting etc so that PRD server can access the same to save the export file when I will be taking the export of PRD client.
Regards
Rohit
