Is working with MRP group mandatory in MRP? If we do not maintain MRP group do we lose any advantage?
Geetika,
You lose some flexibility.
OPPQ settings are plant wide. That means that everything you set here will affect all MRP materials that are extended to that plant.
OPPR allows you to have differing settings within a plant. For instance, you may have different types of production orders you wish to use, depending on the material. You may wish to use different Production order availability checks within a plant. You may wish to allow some orders to start in past, but not others. You may wish to have differing planning horizons or different scheduling horizons, depending on the material. These differences can all be accommodated within one plant by use of MRP groups.
I have seen plants set up both ways. It really depends on the requirements of the business. I don't make that decision until all the client's requirements have been gathered, and I am deciding how complex the solution needs to be.

Dear Geetika,
you will loose advantage if you don't use mrp groups if you have scenario like production in other plant or stock transfer between interplants. In this case the same material is extended to other plants. in order to catch proper number range for purchase requisitions for stock transports, we have to use MRP groups in respective plants. Without MRP groups we can not get required number range for purchase requistions. Rest assured is MRP group takes precedence over Plant parameters. It is not required to maintain MRP groups if the product is maintained in one plant only.
Hope this clears your doubts.

Shiva

Dear Geetika,
1) No, it is not mandatory to have MRP Group every time. ( OPPR )
2) we can maintain plant parameters for MRP settings. it is enough ( OPPQ )
3) But , say if we are making both settings in OPPR & also OPPQ.
then the OPPR ( MRP Group ) settings over right the settings of OPPQ ( Plant parameters )
4) Means MRP Group settings have more priority than plant parameters settings
5) only making settings in OPPR ( MRP Group ) will not effect MRP, untill you assign MRP Group
in Material master MRP - 1 View.
