We've added a few fields in an APPEND structure to the customer and vendor master. Also, we've implemented the appropriate BADIs to have them display and save on the standard transactions...
However, we'd like to apply special security around these fields so that a certain subset of users can maintain.
We've gone through SPRO and Defined the Field Groups for Customer Master Records for those fields. However we cannot Group Fields for Customer Master Records because the list of available fields seem to be hardcoded in the F4 dropdown with SAP standard fields.
Is there any way to group these for security purposes to allow that subset of users to maintain only these fields?

Suggest talking to ABAPer and Security about creating a custom Authorisation Object and allocating to Users as required.
