When I try to update existing oracle 10.2.0.2 i get an error saying "unable to create new central inventory at location /oracle/oraInventory. A non emptry inventory already exists at this location. Please select another location or clean the inventory at /oracle/oraInventory.

I tried to use different location then it says oracle_home is not empty.

I tried to delete oracle_home and inventory and install oracle again but after I run orainstRoot.sh and root.sh scripts and hit ok

instead finishing installation it gives an error saying OUI - 10058 the OUI Inventory on this system does not exist or its not writable. Even after giving 777 to /oracle/oraInventory when try to install patchset 10.2.0.4 OUI doesn't find 10.2.0.2 installed.

It gives similar error as mentioned in the begining.

running installation and upgrade from orabiq

user id - orabiq associated with group dba

/oracle has permission 775 and group dba

/oracle/oraInventory permission is 770 and group is dba

umask 022

SAP is BI 7 running on RedHat Linux 5

Please let me know if something is wrong or missing.

Hi Deepen,

Please check the notes given below...

Note 839182 - Installing patches using OPatch

Note 640910 - Problems when using OPatch

Note 945315 - SAP installation on Linux on POWER/Oracle 10.2

PS: Download the most recent OPatch from SAP Service Marketplace (even if the patch level of the OPatch used seems to be up-to-date). As of June 9, 2008, you can no longer use the OPatch version that is available in patch 4898608 on Oracle MetaLink to install patches (see Oracle MetaLink Note 602334.1). Therefore, continue to use the OPatch version for Release 10.2.0.2 that is available on SAP Service Marketplace for the patch installation for Oracle Release 10.2.0.2 in the SAP environment.

All the best !

Hi Prateek,

10.20.4 patchset cannot be installed using Opatch. this has to be done using OUI itself.

Hi Deepen,

OUI searches the installed ORACLE_HOME from /etc/oratab file and /etc/oraInst.loc file where in your inventory location is mentioned. Please verify that these files point to the correct location/ Update those accordingly and then start the patchset applciation again. I hope you have your existing Oracle home directory intact.

Anup.

Quite possible... When I did a SAP Upgrade and while upgrading the Oracle from 9.2.0.4 to 10.2.0.2 I used OUI.. and even I used the same for patching as well.... I found its easy compared to Opatch. But while searching on SAPnotes I got those and I thought if they are helpful.

All the best !!

Hi,

which installer are you using to install the oracle software.../oracle/stage/102_64/database/SAP/RUNINSTALLER is the installer to be used for SAP. If this is used, it will set all the user environments and stuff correctly. Then, if you start patchset installer as orasid user, there won't be any issues..

Anish

Hi,

Is this fresh installation or you are upgrading the exisiting running system.

in the patch upgrade of 10.2.0.4 you will have a readme.html file, first read that.

Also your Oracle inventory is corrupted. so try to install oracle once again, then try to upgrade it to 10.2.0.4.

This is not fresh installation. As mentioned I already tried cleanup and new installation but not able to upgrade the patch dye to the error during base software installation.

I will go through the html file once again. Please let me know if you have faced similar errors and know the solution.

If your inventory is missing or corrupt, you can recreate it with the -attachhome option of Oracle installer. It is a bit scary, but I remember doing it successfully some time ago. Look at the installer documentation, e.g. here:

hi deepen,

Hope u would have taken the Os level backup of /oracle/<SID>/102_64 as well as /oracle/oraInventory, try to restore it and then try applying the patch. This is purely related to inventory.
