Language Settings for BO reports on BW Data

Hi experts,

We are working with BO reporting tools (Lumira 2.x, Web Intelligence) which are reading data from a SAP BW system. Lately we noticed that sometimes the texts/master data from BW characteristics won’t be displayed properly in our reports, instead we see the technical key, a text which says “not assigned” or a similar behaviour. While working on this issue we narrowed the cause down to language settings – there are many SAP notes and threads in the sap community about this topic.

However, when configuring the SAP BW access for BO, there are quite a few places with settings for the language – for me it remains unclear, which setting is relevant in which use case and how they work together. I would also assume that there is somehow a bug in there because I get different results when scheduling a report versus viewing this report online while the settings are the same.

So let me explain the scenario: We are working with a SAP BW 7.4 SP11 and a BO 4.2 SP5 system. There is an OLAP connection created with the IDT which is the connection to the BW and is configured to use a system user (BOREMOTE) in BW. A Web-Intelligence report uses this connection the report from a BW query.

There are multiple places where you can set a setting for the language:

User settings for the BW user “BOREMOTE”: (language is set to German)
Language setting in the OLAP connection: set to German
Language setting in BI Launchpad for the BO enterprise user “BOUSER”: both settings (product locale and preferred viewing locale) are set to “use browser locale”.
Browser Setting: Language is set to German / language in OS system control is set to German

With these settings, I noticed the following strange behaviour regarding a WebI report which uses this OLAP connection and is scheduled to be delivered to a network drive on a monthly interval (The report’s scheduling instance was created with the BO enterprise user “BOUSER”):

• When scheduling the report, the texts from BW characteristics won’t be displayed, instead it will show the key / “not assigned”.
• When viewing the report online in BI Launchpad (with the same enterprise user), the text will be displayed correctly.

I would assume that the behaviour should be the same since both ways of viewing the report use the same connection / user etc. Can someone explain to me why it’s different?

Looking further on this issue I can get the expected behaviour if I set the settings from the enterprise user “BOUSER” in BI Launchpad for product locale and preferred viewing locale to German. Can someone explain why this setting is relevant and for example not the setting in the OLAP connection? Since the enterprise user which creates the report instances could be my admin user and I sometimes switch between languages (e.g. when I’m following an English tutorial, documentation etc.) I would expect that the language setting in BI Launchpad shouldn’t affect the report unless the OLAP connection is set to SSO (STS between BW and BO is configured) und BW and BO users a matched.

And, in addition: Most of our BO users are imported from the active directory and will be created with “use browser locale” settings automatically. Is there a way to change the default of this setting for new users? For other reports (Lumira), we have STS / SSO configured and every user needs to change these settings manually after the first login to be able to see the texts from BW characteristics in a dashboard correctly.
